Of all the electric cars and concepts we’ve been seeing these days, the Fiat Centoventi is truly an interesting one. The name translates to “One Hundred and Twenty” in Italian, marking a new milestone in Fiat’s history.
The Centoventi according to Fiat, is fundamentally a “blank canvas” ready to be painted to suit the customer’s tastes. In fact, it will be produced in just one livery, which customers will be able to personalise via the 4U program, with a choice of 4 roofs, 4 bumpers, 4 wheel covers and 4 external wrappings.
The Centoventi also marks a new business model for Fiat involving Mopar. A total of 120 accessories will be offered at launch, of which, 6 features (bumpers, polycarbonate roof, livery, Lingotto instrument cluster, batteries and digital tailgate) can only be installed at dealerships, the other 114 accessories including the sound system, dashboard and door storage compartments, and seat cushions – can be purchased online and fitted by the customer themselves at home.
The aforementioned Lingotto is a 20-inch widescreen display, combining a 10-inch driver’s display and another 10-inch infotainment screen. Those who don’t want those two large displays, can simply “hook up” their smartphone or tablet to the dashboard and use its navigation, music and other functions, in combination with the cluster’s main 10-inch screen.
Those holes on the dashboard were apparently inspired by the Pandas. They have a Fiat-patented interlocking system to secure a variety of accessories such as a cup holder, a bottle box, a glove compartment or anything else the user may need.
The seats’ back structure are made from eco-sustainable materials, while the cushions and head restraints can be replaced to change their colors and materials. The front passenger seat can even be substituted with a storage box or a child seat if necessary, while the rear bench can form a “trunk”.
The standard Fiat Centoventi comes with an open roof which can be closed by a “cap”. The roof can be customized as well with one of the available roof options – two-colour polycarbonate top, canvas soft top, integrated cargo box and even a roof with an integrated solar panel. The 50 Watts generated by the solar panel will keep the car cool when it is parked and will power the digital display at the rear of the vehicle. The digital tailgate will only show the Fiat logo, but once the vehicle stops, the driver can switch to “messenger” mode displaying advertisements.
The customization extends to batteries as well. As standard, the car comes with a factory-fitted battery with a range of 100 km. For those who need more, up to 3 additional batteries with a range of 100 km each, can be purchased or hired. The extra batteries are installed underneath the floor, by the service network. A sliding rail which supports and connects the batteries makes their installation or removal quick and easy, Fiat said. An additional battery for mounting under the seat, is also available; it can be disconnected and put on charge directly at the user’s home or garage, just like the battery of an e-bike. With extra batteries, the total range achieved is up to 500 km.
Besides individual owners, Fiat is targeting fleet operators and those who would like to share their car with others.
