As part of its 10 year celebrations, Volkswagen Motorsport India has built a race car out of a Polo, called Polo RX. However, the “Winter Project” car is built beyond the limitations of any racing regulations, apparently, and therefore cannot be used for competitive purposes.
The Polo RX is built as a rear engine, rear-wheel drive car. The team started by creating the right mounts for the engine, gearbox and the suspension at the back of the vehicle. The intercoolers have been placed underneath the rear seats, meaning the fuel tank had to be moved to the front of the car – which probably explains its non-compliance to regulations. As we can see in the pictures, special ducts have also been created to channel fresh air to the engine and maintain the air flow.
The donor car’s dashboard still forms the base for the Polo RX’s race instruments. Although the air conditioning controls have been retained, it is not clear whether the air conditioning itself has been retained.
Powering the Polo RX will be the same 1.8-litre in-line 4-cylinder TSI motor that we saw in the Ameo Cup Car. The engine produces about 205 hp, and is paired to a sequential gearbox with paddle shifters.
The one-off can be purchased for track use only.
