Peugeot has taken its hashtag #UnboringTheFuture very seriously. It started with the beautiful e-Legend concept and continued with the 508 Peugeot Sport Engineered. Peugeot’s designers are doing a great job when it comes to wow factor.
It’s not all sharp lines and angles but the right mix of curves as well. The designers have retained some of the elements of the previous generation model, such as the shape of the front grille, rakish rear windscreen and the shape of the rear doors as well. Depending on the variant, the car gets full-LED 3-claw headlight signature. The rear end has inspiration from the 508, with its black band linking the 3-claw lights.
The GT Line or GT versions feature gloss black wheel arch flaring. The rear diffuser can be had in gloss black finish and depending on the engine variant, can also be enhanced with a chrome exhaust tailpipe. In addition to the standard body colours and Black Diamond roof, the new 208 is available with Metallic Faro yellow, Triple coat Vertigo blue, and Elixir red with colour top-coat. Rounding off the looks are 17-inch wheels with customisable inserts.
The interior layout is equally stunning. Depending on the trim, there is Peugeot i-Cockpit comprising a digital instrument cluster and a touchscreen (5-, 7- or 10-inch). The features list also includes a 3D head-up display and a myriad of driving aids.
These include Adaptive Cruise Control, Stop & Go (with EAT8), Lane positioning assistance, Full Park Assist, Automatic Emergency Brake Assist, Active lane (or verge) keeping assist, Driver Attention Monitoring, Automatic headlight dipping, Speed limit recognition and recommendation, Extended traffic sign recognition, and Active Blind Spot Monitoring.
Powertrains
Powering the new 208 is a 1.2-litre 3-cylinder engine in three states of tune – PureTech 75, PureTech 100 and PureTech 130. Depending on the variant, there’ll be a 5-speed manual, 6-speed manual and an 8-speed automatic gearbox.
On the diesel side, there is a 1.5-litre 4-cylinder BlueHDi 100 engine, paired with a 6-speed manual transmission.
The new 208 sits on PSA Group’s Common Modular Platform dedicated to segments B and C. It helps limit CO2 emissions due to reduction in weight (30 kg/66 lbs lighter) compared to previous F1 platform, and improved aerodynamics.
Also on offer is a Peugeot e-208. Its electric motor develops 100 kW (134 bhp) and 260 Nm (192 lb-ft) of torque. The 50 kWh battery is good for a range of up to 340 km (211 mi) according to the WLTP certification protocol and 450 km (279 mi) according to NEDC. In Sport mode, the vehicle can accelerate from 0-100 km/h (62 mph) in 8.1 seconds.
Two braking modes are also available via the gear lever with appropriate regeneration – Moderate and Augmented. The former provides a sensation close to that felt when braking with a combustion engine, while the latter is for a controlled deceleration via accelerator pedal.
As for charging times, the e-208 takes 16 hours using a conventional domestic socket for a full charge. With a dedicated public charging terminal, 80% charge can be achieved in 30 minutes. According to Peugeot, the battery is guaranteed for 8 years or 160,000 km (99,419 mi) for 70% of its charge capacity.
Thermal pre-conditioning, start or stop charging and checking the status is possible with MyPeugeot smartphone app.
