One of the interesting motorcycles that made its debut at this year’s EICMA show is the new BMW S 1000 RR.
The motorcycle is built on a new frame that BMW calls ‘Flex Frame’, which has made it possible to create a much leaner fuel tank and seating area trim sections for further improved support and knee grip. The frame has improved the ergonomics as well.
Weight reduction begins with the reworked suspension, where the rear suspension weighs 300 g less than before with ‘Full Floater Pro kinematics’. The suspension geometry is designed in such a way that the engine structure bears more load. Buyers can opt for electronic suspension Dynamic Damping Control (DDC).
As for the engine, the newly developed 4-cylinder in-line unit weighs 4 kg (9 lbs) less. It features BMW ShiftCam Technology for variation of valve timings and valve strokes on the intake side. The output is 152 kW or 207 hp at 13,500 rpm and 113 Nm (83 lb-ft) of torque at 11,000 rpm. For the U.S. market, however, the engine will produce 151 kW or 205 hp. The engine is paired with a 6-speed gearbox with straight cut gears.
The new exhaust system also weighs 1.3 kg (3 lbs) less. Overall, there is a weight reduction of 11-14.5 kg (24-32 lbs), and the motorcycle weighs 197 kg (434 lbs) when fully fuelled (DIN unladen) and 193.5 kg (426 lbs) with M Package.
Riding modes include “Rain”, “Road”, “Dynamic” and “Race” as standard and “Pro Modes” option with three additional configurable modes “Race Pro 1-3”.
The Pro Modes enable individual adaptation of functions such as Dynamic Traction Control DTC, ABS and wheelie detection as well as the throttle curve (torque adjustment) and Engine Brake to suit the rider’s own skill level and riding style.
More features include LED lighting, a 6.5-inch instrument display, Shift Assistant Pro for fast up and down shifting without clutch, ABS Pro, and DTC Wheelie Function as standard.
The aforementioned Pro Modes option comes with Launch Control and Pit Lane Limiter. Electronic cruise control can also be added as an option.
