BMW has revealed the second model of the second generation 8 Series. It’s a Convertible, and I think that’s where we should start. The soft-top roof comes in Black as standard or can be had in Anthracite Silver effect as an option.
The button for soft-top operation is located in the centre console and also on the key. BMW says the soft-top opens and closes in 15 seconds at the touch of a button and even while travelling at speeds of up to 50 km/h (31 mph). However, as with most convertible roof systems, you’ll have to keep holding the button until the roof operation is fully complete.
Adaptive LED headlights and LED taillights are fitted as standard. BMW Laserlight with Selective Beam and high beam range of up to 600 metres is available as an option.
To make the open-top car more stiff and confident, BMW has added Convertible-specific underbody bracing, strengthened windscreen frame and rollover bars behind the rear seats that extend by pyrotechnic charge.
For the interiors, the neck warmers integrated into the front head restraints can be had as an option, while the pop-up wind deflector at the rear is fitted as standard.
The diesel model gets electrically adjustable sports seats with memory function and Vernasca leather trim as standard, while the petrol variant comes with multifunction seats and Merino leather trim as standard.
The rear seat backrest folds in 50:50 split and also gets through-loading feature. Boot capacity measures 350 litres. Automatic boot lid operation and Comfort Access including hands-free opening and closing of the boot lid comes as standard.
Adaptive M suspension and Integral Active Steering comes as standard. The M Sport differential (with electronically controlled differential lock) is fitted as standard at the rear axle of the M850i xDrive Convertible and available as an option for the 840d xDrive Convertible. Active roll stabilization is optional for the petrol Convertible.
Rest of the features and options are pretty much the same as the Coupe, including the engines at launch.
The M850i xDrive Convertible is powered by a 523 bhp 4,395 cc V8 twin-turbo petrol engine, while the 840d xDrive Convertible is powered by a 315 bhp 2,993 cc inline-six turbo diesel engine. As with the Coupe, the transmission is an 8-speed Steptronic.
The petrol can sprint from 0-100 km/h (62 mph) in 3.9 seconds (0.2 seconds slower than the Coupe) while the diesel takes 5.2 seconds (0.3 seconds slower). Top speed appears to be limited to 250 km/h (155 mph).
