Jaguar wants to showcase the practicality and everyday usability of the all-electric I-Pace to the world, which is why the Jaguar engineer Stephen Boulter drove the SUV from London to Brussels on a single charge.

The all-electric performance SUV began its intercity trip on London’s South Bank, with its 90 kWh battery pack fully charged, before heading to the Channel Tunnel terminal at Folkestone. Unlike the other vehicles which make the crossing by train, the I-Pace takes the Channel Tunnel’s service tunnel which runs between the two rail tunnels.

Before the journey began, measures were taken to ensure the 369 km trip to Belgium’s capital can be covered without recharging. The battery was pre-conditioned to reach its ideal operating temperature using power from the grid instead of drawing it from the battery, and so is setting the desired cabin temperature.

Furthermore, the regenerative braking was set to High and the drive mode was set to Eco. The Smart Climate function knows that there’s only the driver in the car and only cools the area surrounding him.

Also, the AI-based navigation system takes account of route topography and driving style to calculate the range on any given journey and can plot the most energy-efficient route available. It will also alert the driver if the programmed destination cannot be reached and will help find charging stations within the range.

When the I-Pace arrived at its destination in Brussels, there was still 8% battery left and 32 km range. Responding to a social media comment, Jaguar said that the journey was split across two days to ensure the driver had adequate breaks.
