I’m one of those who absolutely loves modernized classics, which is probably why i’m writing about this on a Sunday. If i had to choose between a modern electric car and a modernized classic with an electric powertrain, you know which one i’d go for.

Anyways, Jaguar’s Classic division is offering all-electric E-types for sale. The decision follows an “overwhelmingly positive reaction” to the original concept (2017) for ‘the most beautiful electric car in the world’.

Naturally, the E-Type Zero will borrow the technology from the I-Pace. The 40 kWh lithium-ion battery pack has the same dimensions, and similar weight, to the standard E-type’s 6-cylinder petrol engine and is mounted in the same location. Depending on the power source, the battery can be recharged in 6 to 7 hours, and is good for a range of about 170 miles (274 km).

An electric powertrain with single-speed reduction gear has been specially designed for the E-type, utilising many I-Pace components. The motor lies just behind the battery pack, in place of the E-type’s gearbox. A new propshaft sends power to a carried-over differential and final drive.

Jaguar didn’t share how much power the motor makes, but 0-62 mph sprint in the concept car apparently takes less than 7 seconds. “Quicker acceleration than the original Series 1 E-type,” the company said.

Rest of the car’s structure including suspension and brakes, remain untouched, to keep the driving experience in line with the original vehicle.

The interiors get some modern touches too with carbon fibre and brushed aluminium trims. And yes, there is a digital instrument cluster and a touchscreen infotainment. The headlamps are LEDs.

Deliveries of the first electric E-types are expected to start from summer 2020. Existing E-Type owners can also get their car converted to an EV.
