At the Pebble Beach in California, Mercedes-Benz unveiled an interesting concept named Vision EQ Silver Arrow which showcases where the company’s ‘EQ’ brand is heading to, in terms of the design. Speaking of which, the Vision EQ Silver Arrow is a brand-specific iteration of the Sensual Purity design language.
The concept also pays homage to the W 125 12-cylinder of 1938, which held the record for the highest speed ever attained on a public road, until the Koenigsegg Agera RS beat it in November 2017.
The 5.3-metre long concept car’s body is made from carbon fibre. The multiple layers of paintwork in Alubeam Silver appear like liquid metal over the top. The concept represents the polar opposites of “hot” and “cold”. Carbon fibre parts such as the front splitter represent the cool and rational aspect of this philosophy, and so are the front display, continuous lighting strip at the front and side skirts, and recessed EQ lettering in illuminated blue.
The partially free-standing multi-spoke wheels which are designed to look like electric motors, are made of lightweight aluminium. Each wheel has 168 spokes painted in rose gold. Tyre partner Pirelli has engraved star pattern on the tread. The tyres measure 255/25 R24 at front and 305/25 R26 at the rear.
The rear end has a motorsport inspired diffuser. Two extendable rear spoilers act as an air brake.
Gorden Wagener, Chief Design Officer at Daimler AG
“Over 80 years ago, the historic Silver Arrows demonstrated that Mercedes-Benz was a pioneer when it came to speed thanks, among other things, to their streamlined shape,” said Gorden Wagener, Chief Design Officer at Daimler AG. “The Vision EQ Silver Arrow draws on that legacy. Intended for acceleration and driving pleasure, it embodies progressive luxury and provides an insight into the future of our design. As a result, the show car drives the design idiom of our new EQ product and technology brand to the top.”
The interiors can be accessed after the canopy electrically lifts over. The large panoramic screen and the steering wheel with an integrated touchscreen is also a part of the lifting canopy.
The saddle brown genuine leather seat has Airscarf neck-level heating integrated into it. The pedals can be adapted to the driver’s specific stature, with a controller located on the seat for adjusting the same.
The driver can use the touchscreen to select programs such as Comfort, Sport and Sport+, which offer different driving characteristics. Apparently, the sound settings can also be configured here: Choices include the sound of a current Formula 1 Silver Arrow or a Mercedes-AMG V8 engine.
As for the power, this soundless Silver Arrow has an output of 550 kW (750 hp). The thin rechargeable battery placed underbody has a useable capacity of approx. 80 kWh and enables a calculated range of over 400 km according to the WLTP. Side air vents help cool the battery.
