Audi has revealed the second generation of its smallest offering — the A1 Sportback. The A1 was launched back in 2010 and has been a successful model for the brand.
The new model has grown in size. Speaking of which, the supermini now measures 4.03 meters in length, 1.74 meters wide and 1.41 meters high.
As for the design, the new A1 Sportback takes the cues from the Ur-quattro and Sport quattro — the brand’s rally icon from 1984. The three flat slits below the edge of the hood are a homage to the Sport quattro, while the wide and sloping C-pillar is reminiscent of the Ur-quattro.
The new A1 Sportback also bears a resemblance to the aforementioned ’80s cars when viewed from the side. The new design has resulted in a drag coefficient of 0.31 Cd.
The S line model gets larger air inlets, additional sill trims, an elongated slit below the hood with two webs and a larger rear wing. The top-of-the-line engine is also recognizable with its twin tailpipes.
Full-LED headlights are optional. The two-part taillights are LEDs as well with a 3D geometrical structure. The new car is available in a choice of 11 colors. The roof can be optionally finished in a contrasting color from the A-pillar to the roof edge spoiler. The exterior mirror housings, the side front spoiler lips and the side sills are also available in a contrasting color.
The compact car rides on 18-inch alloy wheels in bronze, white or black depending on the exterior finish. Depending on the engine variant, 15-, 16- or 17-inch wheels are standard
The driver-focused interiors are equally striking. The center console and the optional MMI touch display are inclined towards the driver at an angle of 13-degrees. The three interior lines — advanced, design selection and S line offer various color and material choices.
A 10.25-inch fully digital instrument cluster and a multifunction steering wheel come as standard, while the customer can upgrade to the optional Audi virtual cockpit. As standard, the car gets MMI radio with Bluetooth connectivity. The customer can opt for an 8.8-inch MMI radio plus or a 10.1-inch MMI navigation plus.
Other options include a connectivity package (which includes Android Auto and Apple CarPlay), Audi phone box, 8-speaker Audi Sound System or 11-speaker Bang & Olufsen Premium Sound System.
Audi offers a choice of two seats. Seat heating is available as an option for both variants. The sport seat comes as standard with manual height adjustment. Pronounced side bolsters and 2-way lumbar support provide additional support.
The luggage capacity has increased by 65 liters. The normal capacity is 335 liters; with the rear seats folded down, it increases to 1,090 liters.
Driver assistance systems
Assistance systems include lane departure warning, speed limiter (which prevents the car from exceeding a selected maximum speed), radar-based Audi pre sense front and adaptive speed assist.
For the first time, there is a reversing camera in addition to the rear parking system. The camera is connected to the parking system plus, which also detects objects in front of the car and warns the driver of them acoustically and visually.
Also, the park assist can steer the A1 Sportback into parking spaces.
Powertrains
There is a choice of TFSI engines with outputs ranging from 70 kW (95 metric hp) to 147 kW (200 metric hp). The basic engine is a 1.0-litre 3-cylinder unit, whereas the top engines are 4-cylinder units displacing 1.5- or 2.0-liters.
Audi offers a manual transmission or the 7-speed S tronic dual-clutch transmission in combination with all engines. The exception is the 40 TFSI, where a 6-speed S tronic transmission is standard.
Further options include the sport suspension, red brake calipers and larger brake discs. The Performance dynamic package also includes adjustable shock absorbers, Audi drive select dynamic handling system and a sound actuator.
