Earlier this year, Volvo Cars had announced that by 2019, every car in their portfolio will have an electric motor, be it a mild hybrid, plug-in or fully electric models. The company had also said that the first all-electric car will be made in China, and will be based on Compact Modular Architecture (CMA).
Speaking to Economic Times, Volvo Auto India MD Charles Frump said that India will be a large chunk of the company’s plan to sell 1 million electrified vehicles globally by 2025. “It is absolutely our intention to be leaders in this area (luxury). By 2019, every new Volvo will be electrified, whether it is hybrid, plug-in hybrid, mild hybrid or full electric,” he said.
While the CMA is for smaller cars such as the 40 Series, Volvo is also developing a fully electric car on its Scalable Product Architecture (SPA).
The company has already started local assembly in Bengaluru recently with the XC90. The plan is to broaden the number of cars that are built locally, the other SPA cars such as the S90, V90 Cross Country and XC60 II as well.
