Beverage and snacks maker PepsiCo has reportedly ordered 100 units of Tesla Semi electric trucks as the company seeks to reduce fuel costs and fleet emissions.
During the mega-unveil event last month, Tesla tried to convince the trucking community that the cost of ownership is significantly less compared to a conventional diesel semi, and the owners can expect to gain $200,000 or more in savings over a million miles based on fuel costs alone. Tesla claimed some impressive figures as well, including a range of 500 miles (805 km) and a new high-speed DC charging solution that will add about 400 miles (644 km) in 30 minutes.
Several transportation firms are still skeptical about the recharge times compared to a diesel fill-up, range, and payload capabilities, and are holding off on the Tesla for now.
However, more than a dozen companies including Walmart stores, fleet operator J.B. Hunt Transport Services, and food service distribution company Sysco Corp have placed their orders for the electric Semi. At the moment, Tesla has around 285 Semi reservations in hand.
PepsiCo intends to deploy Tesla Semis for shipments between manufacturing and distribution facilities and direct to retailers within the 500 miles (805 km) range promised by Tesla Chief Executive Elon Musk.
PepsiCo aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions across its supply chain by a total of at least 20% by 2030.
