After revealing briefly earlier this month, FCA has taken the wraps off the 2018 Jeep Wrangler at the LA Auto Show. The 4th generation Wrangler is available in 2-door and 4-door configurations, and in Sport, Sport S, Sahara (4-door) and Rubicon trims.
One of the major upgrades in the Wrangler’s history is a two-speed transfer case with full-time four-wheel drive and a 2.72:1 low-range gear ratio. Rubicon models get Rock-Trac 4×4 system with a “4LO” ratio of 4:1 and Tru-Lock electric front- and rear-axle lockers.
Other key points include LED headlamps and fog lamps, an approach angle of 44 degrees, breakover angle of 27.8 degrees, departure angle of 37 degrees and ground clearance of 10.9-inches, up to 30-inches of water fording, 3,500 lbs (1,587 kg) towing capacity, 3.5- or an optional 7-inch TFT instrument cluster display, 8.4-inch Uconnect touchscreen and more.
Also, the canvas roof can be retracted with one-touch operation. The doors and hardtop are quicker to remove, thanks to an integrated pull-cup design and improved latches.
Apparently, now there are over 75 advanced safety and security features on offer, including Blind-spot Monitoring and Rear Cross Path detection, ParkView rear backup camera with dynamic gridlines, electronic stability control (ESC) with electronic roll mitigation and four standard airbags.
Powertrains
A 3.0-litre EcoDiesel V6 and a new 2.0-litre turbocharged inline 4-cylinder engines join the Wrangler lineup, while the 3.6-litre Pentastar V6 engine is upgraded for 2018. Depending on the engine, there is a 6-speed manual or an 8-speed automatic transmission.
The new 2.0L turbo petrol has something which Jeep calls eTorque system. It’s essentially a mild-hybrid system, and its functions include auto stop/start, electric power assist, extended fuel shut-off, transmission shift management, intelligent battery charging and regenerative braking. Both the engine and fuel flow may be turned off during stops, coasting, or when the engine is decelerating. The new engine makes 270 hp and 295 lb.-ft. (400 Nm) of torque, paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission.
Overall, the new Wrangler range promises better fuel efficiency.
