Mitsubishi’s new MPV Xpander debuts at the 25th Gaikindo Indonesia International Auto Show. CEO Osamu Masuko says that the new multi-purpose vehicle will go on sale throughout the ASEAN region, starting from Indonesia this fall.
Mitsubishi calls the super aggressive front design the “Dynamic Shield”, a continuum with the Outlander PHEV, the Pajero Sport, and the Eclipse Cross. Apparently, it is giving expression to the protection of both passengers and pedestrians.
Wide flared fenders add to the SUV-inspired looks. The LED position lights are located high up, while the headlights are placed low in the bumper, which according to Mitsubishi will maximize vision during rough road conditions. The rear combination LED lights extend into the tailgate. The L-shaped LED taillights are separate from the brake lights.
The 7-seater MPV measures 4,475 mm long, 1,750 mm wide, and 1,700 mm in height. Ground clearance is at 205 mm. Mitsubishi promises more space inside than competitors in this class. There are a total of 16 bottle holders and an abundance of large and small storage spaces. There even is a concealed secret box, located in the dashboard.
The panoramic windshield is made from thick, high-quality, soundproof glass, laminated with an extra sound-absorbing layer to block out outside noise, and to make the cabin quieter. The air conditioner comes with 8 power settings for the front and 4 settings in the rear.
Other equipment includes a Keyless Operation System (KOS), multi-information color LED display, brake assist, ABS (Anti-lock Braking System), ASC (Active Stability Control), HSA (Hill Start Assist), and ESS (Emergency Stop Signal system).
Powertrains
As for the powertrains, there is only a 1.5-litre 4-cylinder petrol engine at the moment, with an output of 105 PS (103.5 hp). Transmission options are a 5-speed manual or 4-speed AT, with a front-wheel-drive configuration.
The Xpander starts at 189,050,000 Rp (Indonesia) for GLX 5-speed MT trim. The company plans to ship it to ASEAN, and some other markets as well in early 2018.
