Jaguar E-Pace: German rivals have something to worry about?

The Jaguar E-Pace, which made a record breaking 15.3-meter-long jump and a 270 degree barrel roll into the compact luxury SUV segment, has us asking that question.

Jaguar’s baby SUV is not made for 360-degree loops and barrel rolls, but rather to break the sales records of the luxury compact SUV market, dominated by BMW X1, Audi Q3 and Mercedes GLA.

As for the Indian market, the E-Pace has already been listed on the Jaguar India website, which means it’s just a matter of time for an official announcement.

So, does the German rivals have anything to worry about? I think they do. Because the E-Pace ticks all the right boxes for a compact luxury SUV, and first of all, it looks great! I think it looks cute like a baby Jaguar, it has got matrix LED headlamps, LED taillamps, electric front seats with memory, 10-inch touchscreen infotainment system, 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, head-up display, dual-zone climate control, cruise control, Meridian surround sound system, panoramic sunroof and a lot more.

The list of standard and optional safety equipment is also a big one. Along with the front, side and curtain airbags, there is a pedestrian airbag as well. And besides the usual ABS, EBD, traction control, and all that stuff, there is Hill Start Assist, Roll Stability Control, Emergency Brake Assist, All Surface Progress Control and lots of driver assistance systems.

However, radar-based safety systems such as the Autonomous Emergency Braking and Lane Keep Assist might not make it to the Indian market due to the regulations.

Which brings us to the powertrains then. Internationally, the E-Pace has got a choice of five powertrains, three diesel and two petrol, with 9-speed auto or a 6-speed manual. The Jaguar India brochure mentions two diesel and one petrol powertrain, both 2.0L Ingenium units. The petrol makes 245 hp, while the top-end diesel makes 177 hp. All 3 models are paired with a 9-speed ZF auto with all-wheel-drive configuration, which means, India might not get a 6-speed manual.

The E-Pace has got fully independent suspension with multilink at the rear. While the Adaptive Dynamics where you can customize certain settings is optional, Jaguar plans to introduce Torque Vectoring by Braking next year.
