That’s right, this is Hyundai’s take on the Kia EV9 that went on sale over a year ago. Besides its home market of Korea, the Ioniq 9 is confirmed to go on sale in the U.S. and Europe in the first half of 2025. The Kia EV9 is on sale in the Indian market (available only as GT-Line AWD) at a ridiculous base price of INR 1.3 crore (USD 152,909 or EUR 147,054) due to the country’s taxation on fully imported vehicles, and it remains to be seen if the Ioniq 9 will also have such an astronomical price tag. The EV9 GT-Line AWD in the U.S. market, for example, has an MSRP of USD 73,900.
Personally, I like the Ioniq 9’s cleaner and understated looks compared with EV9’s messy design, but maybe that’s just me. Hyundai calls this an ‘Aerosthetic’ design, and I think it’s hard to argue. The front-end features the so-called Parametric Pixels, which can be found in the rear fascia as well. When you opt for the digital side mirrors as opposed to the traditional ones, your SUV will have a drag coefficient of just 0.259 Cd. Underbody airflow enhancing measures include a new dual-motion active air flap (AAF) system, a 3D-shaped underbody cover, and of course, aerodynamic wheels. Wheel sizes range between 19- and 21-inches.
At 3,130 mm, the Ioniq 9 boasts the longest wheelbase of any Hyundai, which means, there shouldn’t be any problem finding a comfortable seating position for any of the three-row passengers. The so-called Relaxation Seats in the first and second rows can fully recline, plus also feature the Dynamic Body Care system with massaging functionalities. Depending on the market, the second-row Swiveling Seats are also available. Other key features include a panoramic curved display (12-inch + 12-inch), optional 14-speaker Bose audio system, Hyundai AI Assistant (AI-enabled voice recognition system), and Active Noise Control-Road system.
Depending on the market, the Ioniq 9 will offer RWD and AWD options. But no matter which you choose, the battery pack is gonna be the same 110.3 kWh (NCM). The Long-Range RWD with 19-inch wheels is estimated to offer a WLTP range of up to 620 km (385 mi).
Variants | Power & Torque
Long-Range | RWD | 160 kW (217.5 metric hp) and 350 Nm (258 lb-ft) |
AWD | 70 kW (95 metric hp) and 255 Nm (188 lb-ft) front, and 160 kW (217.5 metric hp) and 350 Nm (258 lb-ft) rear
Performance | AWD | 160 kW (217.5 metric hp) and 350 Nm (258 lb-ft) on each axle: 320 kW (435 metric hp) and 700 Nm (516 lb-ft) total |
The performance AWD model with 21-inch wheels is claimed to sprint from 0-100 km/h (62 mph) in 4.9 seconds. The top speed appears to be limited to 200 km/h (124 mph).
The Ioniq 9 is also equipped with a Terrain Traction Control System for rough roads and an Auto Terrain Mode that uses AI to recognize the road surface and select the optimal driving mode, the company said.
