Citroen Basalt launched at Rs 7.99 lakh

Citroen-Basalt

Just two days after Tata Motors launched its Curvv coupe-SUV, Citroen scrambled its Basalt coupe-SUV into the market, with introductory prices starting at INR 7.99 lakh, ex-showroom. Unlike its aforementioned direct rival, the Basalt is not available as an EV (yet). Strangely, the company is yet to reveal variant-wise pricing, but your local dealer might be a reliable source for that information.

The photos below are of the final production version of the Basalt, while the photos above are of the near-production prototype we saw back in April 2024. Both look almost identical, except for the wheels of the production model, which lack the prototype’s noticeable curvature. Not sure why they let go of that inner curvature; I think the wheels look even better with that.

But anyway, key exterior features depending on the trim include LED projector headlights, 3D-effect taillights, and 16-inch alloy wheels. Nope, none of the variants get a sunroof; kinda missed opportunity if you ask me.

As for exterior colors, you got Polar White, Steel Grey, Platinum Grey, Cosmo Blue, and Garnet Red options. There are two dual-tone options as well: Polar White with Perla Nera Black roof and Garnet Red with Perla Nera Black roof. Want a full black car? Well, go check with your local customization shop.

Inside, key highlights include a 10.2-inch central touchscreen, a 7-inch digital cluster, wireless Android Auto & Apple CarPlay connectivity, a 15-watt wireless smartphone charger, My Citroen Connect 2.0 connected car functions, auto AC, and 3-step adjustable rear seating. Safety features include standard 6 airbags, ESP, Hill-hold Assist, TPMS, seat belt reminder for all seats, rear parking sensors, and a reversing camera.

Moving on to the juicy bits of the story, Citroen offers a couple of powertrain options for the buyers. For starters, there’s a 1.2-litre 3-cylinder naturally aspirated petrol engine with 60 kW (82 metric hp) at 5750 rpm and 115 Nm (85 lb-ft) of torque at 3,750 rpm. This engine is paired with a 5-speed manual transmission. The second option is a 1.2-litre 3-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine with 81 kW (110 metric hp) at 5,500 rpm and 190 Nm (140 lb-ft) of torque at 1,750 rpm. Do note that the aforementioned torque is when the engine is paired with a 6-speed manual transmission. If you opt for the 6-speed automatic, you get a torque of 205 Nm (151 lb-ft) between 1,750 and 2,500 rpm.
