Mercedes-AMG GT 63 PRO 4Matic+ debuts with more PRO numbers

Mercedes-Benz is expanding its second-gen AMG GT lineup with the PRO version, billed as an even better track tool than the GT 63. Pricing and availability information is yet to be disclosed, but your local dealer might have an idea. In the meantime, let’s take a look at what’s all the hoopla.

Visually, the new GT 63 PRO attempts to look more aggressive by means of a redesigned front bumper that includes larger side intakes—which benefit the radiators now positioned in the left and right front wheel arches. While the Airpanel active air control system at the front is present here too, the fixed rear wing—which was an optional extra in the GT 63, is included as standard here. The radiators of the differentials on the front and rear axles and the transfer case of the 4Matic system are now actively cooled, thanks to coolant circuits powered by electrically operated water pumps.

The AMG Exterior Carbon Fibre package comes standard here, which is not a surprise. The AMG ceramic composite brake system with 420 mm discs at the front gripped by 6-piston calipers, AMG Active Ride Control suspension with active roll stabilization, and rear-axle steering, are also a standard affair. As standard, the car rides on 21-inch forged lightweight wheels in a cross-spoke design, painted exclusively in Himalaya grey matt. The rims are wrapped with Michelin Pilot Sport 5 tyres as standard, while buyers can spec the Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2R Cup tyres at no extra cost.

Let’s get the numbers out of the way then, shall we? This M176/M177/M178 engine family is now a decade old, but I think we all can agree that it is one of the best 4.0 V8 biturbo powerplants ever produced. In the previous-gen GT family and the current G 63, it sounds incredible. Recently I saw a G 63 being PPF’d, and I stopped there for several minutes admiring its burbling V8. But anyway, in this new GT 63 Pro, the M177 offers 450 kW (612 metric hp) between 5,500 and 6,500 rpm and 850 Nm (627 lb-ft) of torque between 2,350 and 5,000 rpm. There’s no mild-hybrid stuff here. Compared with the previous-gen GT R Pro, there’s an increase of 20 kW (27 metric hp) and 150 Nm (111 lb-ft). In fact, the torque is higher than that of the previous-gen GT Black Series.

The official performance figures are as follows: 0-100 km/h (62 mph) in 3.2 seconds (0.4 seconds quicker than the GT R Pro) and the top speed is 317 km/h (197 mph). Inside, you get AMG Performance seats and AMG Performance steering wheel as standard, upholstered in a combo of Nappa leather and Microcut microfibre (Alcantara). 2+2 seats are an optional extra.
