2025 BMW M5 debuts with 720+ electrified horses

BMW is expanding the 8th-gen 5 Series (G60) lineup with the M5 (sedan). It is available only in a single PHEV variant currently, with a base price of €144,000 in Germany. Those who would prefer the new M5 Touring will have to wait a li’l longer.

I’d say the styling of the G60 series has grown on me, but if I had the option, I’d still go for something in the pre-owned G30 LCI series. This new M5 tries really hard to not look like a mix of a Skoda and a Toyota. Its bodykit includes sporty front and rear bumpers, quad tailpipes housed in the diffuser, and a standard wheel setup of 20-inch at the front and 21-inch at the rear. There are a couple more optional M light alloy wheel designs, costing €400 and €550, respectively. The carbon fibre elements you see in the photos here, including the roof, the mirror caps, and the rear spoiler, are all part of the €3,200 M Carbon Exterior Package. A €22,470 Ultimate Package includes—among other things—the aforementioned M Carbon Exterior Package and a €9,900 M Carbon Ceramic brake system.

But don’t worry, you get adaptive LED headlights, BMW Iconic Glow grille, and M High-gloss Shadow Line with extended elements as standard. Also part of the standard equipment includes adaptive M suspension with electronically controlled dampers, Integral Active Steering (also steers the rear wheels by up to 1.5 degrees), M Compound brakes, and an electronically controlled Active M Differential at the rear axle.

Let’s get the numbers out of the way then, shall we? The new M5 is a PHEV. It’s a combination of a 4.4-litre V8 biturbo petrol engine and an electric motor (PSM) integrated into a ZF 8-speed automatic gearbox. The ICE offers 430 kW (585 metric hp) and 750 Nm (553 lb-ft), while the e-motor develops 145 kW (197 metric hp) and up to 450 Nm (332 lb-ft) of effective torque—resulting from pre-gearing. The system figures, however, are 535 kW (727 metric hp) and 1,000 Nm (738 lb-ft). The M xDrive AWD system distributes these numbers to both axles.

There’s a 22.1 kWh (gross) lithium-ion battery pack, estimated to offer a range of anywhere between 67 – 69 km (42 – 43 mi). The new M5 is not a lightweight car, as you can probably guess. It weighs 2,435 kg (5,368 lbs) unladen. But anyway, the official 0-100 km/h (62 mph) sprint time is 3.5 seconds, while the top speed is limited to 250 km/h (155 mph). The aforementioned Ultimate Package also includes a €2,000 M Driver’s Package that unlocks a top speed of 305 km/h (190 mph).

Inside, in terms of technology, the new M5 benefits from all the upgrades made to the regular 5 Series models. M multifunction seats, BMW Live Cockpit Professional, BMW Head-Up Display, and four-zone climate control are all included as standard here. A Bowers & Wilkins Surround Sound System is also part of the M5’s standard specification.
