Audi has taken the wraps off the 3rd-gen A5 lineup, with prices in Germany starting at €45,200 (including 19% VAT). This might come as a surprise for many, but the 3rd-gen A5 also serves as the successor to the A4 lineup, which is why the new A5 is codenamed B10. This is all part of Audi’s new naming strategy where the odd numbers will be allocated to ICE vehicles and evens to BEVs. But anyway, the new A5 lineup currently includes four main variants:
Model | German base prices (including VAT) |
A5 sedan | €45,200 |
A5 Avant | €46,850 |
S5 sedan | €78,500 |
S5 Avant | €80,150 |
The B10 A5 is the first Audi built on the new Premium Platform Combustion (PPC), a naming strategy similar to PPE. The electronics architecture required for this platform was developed in collab with VW Group subsidiary Cariad.
The design of the new A5 is evolutionary. Meaning, the designers have played it safe by not making any drastic changes like those from Munich. All the styling elements look clean and proportional. The design might not make you go “WoW”, but if you pay €910 extra, you get an optional black package that makes the cars look significantly stunning—in combination with the new Matrix LED headlights and second-gen digital OLED taillights. These lights, part of an expensive optional package, perform animations/digital light signatures.
The wheel sizes for the regular A5 depending on the trim range between 17- and 20-inches, while the S5 models offer 19- and 20-inch options in various designs. The standard suspension is claimed to offer a blend of comfort and sportiness, while an expensive optional pack gets you a sporty suspension setup with adaptive dampers. But anyway, both models get electromechanical progressive steering.
Let’s get the numbers out of the way then, shall we? The A5 starts with a 110 kW (150 metric hp) 2.0L turbo petrol (FWD), and offers options including a 150 kW (204 metric hp) 2.0L turbo petrol (FWD), a 150 kW 2.0L turbo diesel (FWD), a 150 kW 2.0L turbo petrol quattro and a 150 kW 2.0L turbo diesel quattro. The diesel powertrains are combined with a 48-volt mild-hybrid system. But when it comes to the transmission, it’s gonna be a 7-speed DCT for everybody.
The S5 is available with a 3.0L V6 turbo petrol engine that offers 270 kW (367 metric hp) between 5,500 and 6,300 rpm and 550 Nm (406 lb-ft) of torque between 1,700 and 4,000 rpm. This engine too is paired with a 7-speed DCT, a 48-volt mild-hybrid system, and of course, the quattro permanent AWD system. The official 0-100 km/h (62 mph) sprint time is 4.5 seconds, while the top speed is limited to 250 km/h (155 mph). The power and torque figures are higher than the previous-gen S5, but let’s see how much the upcoming RS5 offers.
Inside, there’s a brand new dashboard with a generous number of displays. The curved panel houses a 11.9-inch Audi virtual cockpit and a 14.5-inch central touchscreen. A 10.9-inch front passenger display is part of an optional package, as are 3-zone climate control, adaptive cruise control, and a bunch of ADAS features. A head-up display and a B&O audio system with 3D sound are part of a €2,280 optional package. And of course, there are multiple options for seat materials. The S5 offers sports seats and sports seats plus options.
