As you might know, Mercedes-Benz is baking an all-electric version of its legendary Geländewagen (G-Class)—which is gonna be called the ‘EQG’ for obvious reasons. It was showcased as a concept in September 2021 as part of the company’s IAA 2021 show lineup. Well, it appears that the production model is now off-roading close to its world premiere—which is expected later this year. But in the meantime, the company has invited a select few journalists and tech influencers to offer a sneak peek of this upcoming electric G-Class.
And what a sneak peek it is. In Zack Nelson’s video above, the EQG can be seen doing some crazy stuff, such as extreme wheel articulation (at around 1:54, the rear left wheel bends inwards so much that it almost looks like it’s gonna snap), crawling backward on a boulder-filled steep incline, doing some high-speed high jumps, and of course, reckless G-turns. The crawling backward thing and G-turns are easy to understand, because, you know, the EQG has got a motor for each wheel. And apparently, there’s gonna be a low-range gearbox too.
Obviously, we don’t have any technical information whatsoever, but if you remember, then Daimler (now Mercedes-Benz Group) had trademarked EQG 560 and EQG 580 nameplates in early 2021, which tells us that the EQG is gonna come in multiple flavors.
