2023 NIO ES8 debuts with smooth lines and 900 km range

2023-NIO-ES8

Although the NIO EP9 hypercar made some sensational headlines in late 2016, I mostly remember the ‘NIO’ brand with its ES8 SUV—mostly because it had a cute AI assistant named ‘NOMI’ on the dashboard. The SUV has now entered the second generation, launched during the NIO Day 2022 event in China alongside the EC7 coupe-SUV. Prices in China start at RMB 528,000 (US$ 76,540 or INR 63,36,888), with deliveries commencing in June 2023 in China.

Battery 2023 ES8 2023 ES8 Executive Version
75 kWh RMB 528,000 RMB 548,000
100 kWh RMB 586,000 RMB 606,000
BaaS (Battery-as-a-Service) RMB 458,000 RMB 478,000

As with the EC7, the new ES8 sits on the company’s second-generation electric drive platform, and sports the same, simplified design language with smooth lines as its aforementioned coupe sibling. A new platform means, of course, new dimensions: the 2023 ES8 measures 5,099 mm long (+77), 1,989 mm wide (+27) and 1,750 mm tall (-6), with a wheelbase of 3,070 mm (+60). The revised styling is claimed to include over 60 aerodynamic improvements, resulting in a drag co-efficient of 0.250 Cd (vs 0.290 Cd of the outgoing model). Smart Matrix LED Headlights, 22-inch forged wheels, flush door handles, flush side windows, side-view cameras and an invisible rear wiper (mounted into the spoiler) are some of the other key highlights on the outside.

On the inside, things look supremely comfortable and high-tech with 22-way power adjustable Lounge Seats at the front (driver’s seat is 20-way); a 5-mode hot stone massage function for the second-row seats; a 23-speaker audio system with Dolby Atmos and Dirac Pro; a 5-zone climate control, and the same digital displays and AI stuff you saw in the EC7.

The Executive Version gets you one-touch access to the third-row. Buyers can also opt for the third-row comfort seats which come with heating function as standard. The second-row Executive Console comes with fast wireless smartphone charging, while the lower section of it can be installed with an optional refrigerator.

Moving on to the juicy bits of the story, the ES8 also packs a dual-motor AWD powertrain with combined peak figures of 480 kW (653 metric hp) and 850 Nm (627 lb-ft); same figures as the EC7. In Sport+ mode, the SUV is claimed to sprint from 0-100 km/h (62 mph) in 4.1 seconds, which understandably is 0.3 seconds slower than the EC7. NIO claims a CLTC range of up to 900 km (559 mi).

Dual-chamber air suspension and Continuous Damping Control are some of the other key highlights of the new ES8.
