2023 Mercedes-AMG G 63 4×4² is gonna be the last of its kind

The time has come for the new G-Class Squared to say “hi” (or, “high”) again, and then goodbye again (for good).

That’s right, the boss of the G-Class division Toni Mäntele says that the new G-Class Squared is gonna be the “last of its kind”, which should come as no surprise because almost every carmaker is bidding goodbye to their respective gigantic ICE vehicles with some kind of special editions. The Bugatti brand, for example, recently bid goodbye to its W16 quad-turbo engine with the Mistral. So, even though the new G-Class Squared is based on the second-gen Geländewagen, it’ll be a limited-run collectible model—as confirmed by Mr. Toni himself.

While the previous-gen G-Class Squared was available as G500 4×4² (4.0L biturbo V8) and its pickup truck sibling the AMG G 63 6×6 (5.5L biturbo V8), the second iteration is gonna be called the AMG G 63 4×4². But the basic formula remains the same: portal axles, enough ground clearance to clear a skyscraper (well, metaphorically, of course), and a grumbly V8. Toni says that the new G-Class Squared offers 351 mm (13.8-inch) of ground clearance. Just to compare, the regular G 63 has a ground clearance of ~238 mm. Interestingly, the G500 4×4² had 450 mm ground clearance. But anyway, Toni also claims that the new car can climb hills as steep as 45-degrees, plus the water wading depth is now 910 mm.

Powering the new Mercedes-AMG G 63 4×4² is a 4.0L V8 biturbo motor with 430 kW (585 metric hp) and 850 Nm (627 lb-ft) of torque. While these numbers are the same as those of the regular G 63, they are significantly higher than those of the G500 4×4², which I think explains the reduced ground clearance this time around.

At the time of publishing this story, the off-roader was not listed on any of the official Mercedes websites. Pricing info and planned production numbers aren’t available either. But during the final days of the G 500 4×4² (production came to an end in October 2017), the asking price was €231,693 (including VAT) in Germany, which might give you an idea of the new model’s pricing. At present, the regular G 63 in Germany starts at €187,246.50, and I’ll leave the G 63 4×4² price guess to you.
