In case you missed the story last year, Yamaha teamed-up with ShinMaywa Industries to jointly develop small aircrafts; the agreement included Yamaha supplying its small engines for the same. Well, the companies successfully conducted an early-stage test flight of a prototype aircraft called the XU-L (Experimental Utility aircraft – Large type) at the Fujikawa Gliding Field in Shizuoka Prefecture, Japan, last month.
The XU-L was fitted with an existing 499 cc two-cylinder Yamaha engine—which appears to be a motorcycle engine. Technical details are not available just yet, but the joint statement said that the “companies plan to further continue this joint research endeavor”.
