Honda is celebrating 30 years of Type R and 50 years of Civic
The 11th gen Civic lineup is now joined by the much-awaited Civic Type R, confirmed to go on sale in Japan this September and in the U.S. this fall. Europeans will have to wait till early 2023. The new Civic Type R is claimed to be the most powerful Type R ever.
The 2023 Civic Type R sports a honeycomb grille mesh on the front fascia, complemented with a red H badge and a Type R logo on the upper grille. On the side, you can notice the outlet just behind the front wheel arch, and also a fin just in front of the rear wheel arch. As for wheels, they are lightweight 19-inch matte black alloys wrapped with bespoke Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tyres. At the rear, there’s a gigantic wing mounted on aluminium mounts, and down at the bottom, there are triple exhaust outlets housed in a model-specific diffuser.
The Type R also boasts model-specific suspension tuning. The 350 mm front discs are gripped by Brembo 4-pot calipers. Besides white, the new Civic Type R will be available in gray, black, red and blue paint finishes.
The cockpit oozes just as oomph factor as the exterior with bucket seats upholstered in a red suede-like material, red seat belts, red carpeting, red floor mats, and red contrast stitching wherever possible. There’s too much red going on for my liking, but I guess most buyers wouldn’t mind.
Also, notice the Type R numbered plaque on the passenger side of the dashboard. Other key features include the Honda LogR data logger that offers real-time information on the mechanicals of the vehicle and vehicle behavior resulting from the driver’s input; a stopwatch to record lap times; the ability to share driving videos, and special graphics in the instrument display when you select the +R driving mode.
Powering the 2023 Civic Type R is a 2.0L 4-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine with yet-to-be-disclosed output figures. But I’m sure you can expect the numbers a lot more than those of the Civic Si, because remember, we are talking about “the most powerful Type R ever”. The engine is coupled with a 6-speed manual gearbox that drives the front wheels. There’ll also be a rev-match system with auto blip.
