The BMW M division is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year, and depending on the market, there are some special editions on offer. Take the M3 Edition 50 Jahre BMW M (Translation: 50 years of BMW M Edition) for example; it is exclusive to the North American markets and is limited to 500 units.
Based on the M3 Competition xDrive variant, the special edition is offered in a choice of five paint finishes with each one paying homage to the previous five generations of M3. The legendary E30 M3 is represented in a vibrant, non-metallic Cinnabar Red; the E36 M3 in a dazzling Techno Violet; the E46 M3 in a Deep Interlagos Blue; E92 M3 (Lime Rock Park Edition) in a Fire Orange III, and the F80 M3 CS in a Limerock Grey. Two of the colors, Techno Violet, and Interlagos Blue, were revived just for this Edition.
And regardless of the exterior paint choice, each M3 Edition 50 Jahre BMW M comes with forged wheels (19-inch at the front and 20-inch at the rear) in matte Orbit Grey finish. Behind the wheels, the calipers of the standard M Compound brakes can be painted in red, blue or black. Buyers can opt for M Carbon Ceramic brakes with gold calipers. Further exterior enhancements from the M Performance catalog are also part of the package; these include a carbon fiber front splitter, a bootlid carbon fiber spoiler, and quad tailpipes with carbon fiber and titanium finishers. And of course, a carbon fiber roof comes standard as well. Also, notice that the standard BMW roundels are replaced with retro-ish BMW Motorsport logos.
Inside, there are standard M Sport seats (or optional M Carbon bucket seats) upholstered in a black Merino leather, complemented with tri-color M stripes on the headrests. The M stripes can also be found on the headrests of the outer rear seats. The carbon fibre-trimmed centre console is decorated with a special aluminum plaque.
