Jeep is baking a 7-seater SUV named Meridian for the Indian market, and the test mule recently traversed from Kashmir to Kanyakumari (K2K) taking the route through the Meridian 77-degree East (a line of longitude that extends from the North Pole to the South Pole), wearing a special camouflage inspired by the culture and aspects of the states that lie on the aforementioned line.

Now you know where the name came from: it was apparently inspired by the line that passes through the length of India connecting some of the most beautiful states and cultures. Another reason ‘Meridian’ won in the list of 70 names was that it’ll be “Made-in-India”.

But anyway, the Meridian appears to be the India-spec version of the 2022 Commander that was launched in Brazil in August 2021. The Commander is built around the same platform as the Compass and offers up to 7 seats. The following photos are of the Commander.

Since every carmaker in India now offers a 7-seater SUV or an MPV, Jeep probably thought of giving it a shot since the Compass is fairly well received in the country.

“The Jeep Meridian is our latest offering for the Indian market as part of our 2022 product strategy. We wanted to announce the name with an innovative activation and the K2K drive through the length of India is in line with the name of our new model. We tested the SUV on every kind of terrain India has to offer—by taking it on a challenging journey from Kashmir to Kanyakumari,” said Nipun Mahajan, Head of Jeep India.

“We are proud to say, the Meridian performed flawlessly. We are delighted to deliver today, a car that is both Made-in-India and Made-for-India for our customers anticipating the Meridian. From performance to looks and comfort to off-roading prowess, the Jeep Meridian is truly unmatched in its category,” added Mr. Mahajan.

The Meridian is expected to be launched in India in mid-2022, with local specifications and pricing to be announced closer to the launch date.
