BMW has wholesale updated the 8 Series models with subtle styling tweaks and onboard tech upgrades. The lineup includes the 8 Series Coupé, the 8 Series Convertible, the 8 Series Gran Coupé, and of course, the M8 Competition Coupé, the M8 Competition Convertible, and the M8 Competition Gran Coupé. Depending on the market, these LCI models (Life Cycle Impulse—BMW’s term for a facelift) will go on sale from March 2022.
Don’t worry if you’re having trouble finding out the visual differences, because as mentioned, they are rather subtle. Speaking of which, on the front fascia of the regular 8 Series models, there’s a new kidney grille with U-bars—which are now illuminated as standard, and the M850i variants get a little M badge on the grille. Adaptive LED headlights come standard. The 840i, 840i xDrive and 840d xDrive models get M sports package as standard, which comes with aerodynamically optimized exterior elements. There are, of course, new 19- and 20-inch wheel designs, and four new colors: Skyscraper Grey metallic, San Remo Green metallic, M Portimao Blue metallic and Frozen Tanzanite Blue metallic. Also, the standard equipment now includes M sports brakes with calipers finished in blue.
The M models feature standard BMW Laser Light, high-gloss black kidney grille, new 20-inch M light-alloy wheels and standard M Compound brake system (carbon ceramics optional). And yes, there are new colors as well: Skyscraper grey metallic, Brooklyn grey metallic, Isle of Man green metallic, Tanzanite blue metallic, and matt finishes such as Frozen Pure Grey metallic, Frozen Deep Grey metallic, Frozen Deep Green metallic and Frozen Tanzanite Blue metallic.
The refreshed cockpit features an upgraded BMW Live Cockpit Professional system where the central touchscreen has grown from 10.25- to 12.3-inches. The multifunction seats previously only standard in the M850i models, have been extended to the 6-cylinder models as well; their range of functions includes lumbar support and standard memory function for both driver’s and front passenger’s seats. The four-zone climate control which was optional on the 8 Series Gran Coupe is now standard. There are new seat and accent materials as well. The M models get new Merino leather & Alcantara combo upholstery, which can be specified in Black & Sakhir Orange color combo for both standard M Sport seats and the optional M Carbon bucket seats.
The rest of the things will remain unchanged. The regular 8 Series model variants include 840i Coupe (333 hp 3.0L in-line 6-cylinder petrol), 840i xDrive Coupe, M850i xDrive Coupe (530 hp 4.4L V8 petrol), 840d xDrive Coupe (340 hp 3.0L in-line 6-cylinder diesel), 840i Convertible, 840i xDrive Convertible, M850i xDrive Convertible, 840i Gran Coupe, 840i xDrive Gran Coupe, M850i xDrive Gran Coupe and 840d xDrive Gran Coupe. The M models pack a 625 hp 4.4L V8 biturbo petrol.
