The 4th gen Mercedes-Benz GLE is getting diesel mild-hybrid variants in Europe, with prices in Germany starting at EUR 75,053.30 for GLE 300d 4Matic and EUR 79,182.60 for GLE 300d 4Matic Coupé variant. Both variants will be available in German dealerships from November 2021.
The mild-hybrid powertrain combines the OM654 M engine with an integrated starter-generator (ISG) that is part of a 48-volt electrical system. Unlike the OM654 which displaces 1,950 cc, the OM654 M (M for modified) displaces 1,993 cc. The ICE pumps out 200 kW (272 metric hp) at 4,200 and 550 Nm (406 lb-ft) of torque from 1,800 to 2,200 rpm. The mild-hybrid system offers an additional boost of 15 kW (20 metric hp) and 200 Nm (148 lb-ft) for short periods. A 9-speed torque converter automatic drives all four wheels via a transfer case.
The four-cylinder diesel is also very advanced in terms of exhaust gas after-treatment. The catalytic converter stores nitrogen oxides (NOx), especially under cold-start conditions, so that they can be reduced in the SCR catalytic converter when the engine is warm. The specially coated DPF (diesel particulate filter) reduces particulate emissions. The two active SCR catalytic converters (Selective Catalytic Reduction) with separately metered AdBlue injection allow effective nitrogen oxide reduction in all operating ranges. These converters are installed close to the engine and on the floor of the vehicle.
