Mercedes-Benz has commenced local assembly of W223 S-Class at its Pune facility in India, which makes the luxury limo cheaper by about INR 60 lakh compared with the CBU version that was launched in the country in June. The S 350d is priced at INR 1.57 crore and the S 450 4Matic is priced at INR 1.62 crore; the prices are ex-showroom, Pan India. In case you didn’t notice, the diesel CBU was a more powerful S 400d.

The S 350d is also powered by a 2.9-litre (2,925 cc) in-line 6-cylinder turbocharged diesel engine, but makes significantly lesser figures: 210 kW (286 metric hp) between 3,600 rpm and 4,200 rpm and 600 Nm (443 lb-ft) of torque between 1,200 rpm and 3,200 rpm. Compared with the S 400d, there’s a shortage of about 44 metric hp and 100 Nm, but since the owners will be relaxing in the rear seat, they’ll most likely not gonna notice any difference. For S-Class-specific production, we have implemented a host of new technologies and processes like augmented reality-based technology with Holo-lens for online training of operators. A special process for the wheel alignment has been created. The automatic robotic gluing ensures a quick assembly process or the use of a new brake filling process guaranteeing quicker vehicle responses; we have introduced new technological innovations and advancements in the S-Class production to name a few. – Piyush Arora, Executive Director, Operations, Mercedes-Benz India
