Porsche Renndienst shows off its fancy seats and central driving position

Porsche-Renndienst-concept

Unless you missed the fantastic Porsche Unseen series last year, you most certainly remember the Renndienst minivan (concept). Renndienst, or a “racing service” van, is a futuristic homage to a classic Volkswagen racing service van that once served the factory racing team. While Porsche isn’t planning on launching a minivan anytime soon, the Renndienst offers a “what if in future” imagination; when fully autonomous electric vehicles take over major cities around the world in probably about a decade or so, what would a Porsche minivan look like.

More specifically, what would its interior offer. Well, as you can see, it doesn’t ditch the steering wheel altogether, and the driver sits right in the middle because it’s a Porsche and not just any minivan. That curved display behind the steering wheel appears to have come from a Taycan. There are two additional, foldable displays on either side of the driver, apparently for the offset passengers in the first row. While there are sufficient displays and haptic controls, the Renndienst retains physical toggles too, for features such as lights, suspension and ESC, and the idea according to interior design head Markus Auerbach, is to have a balance between analogue and digital controls.

When in autonomous mode, the driver’s seat can be rotated 180 degrees to face the other passengers. Notice the haptic controls for the door and media on the side panels. The lounge seat-like bench in the last row is an interesting one too; notice the “floating” headrests to facilitate unobstructed views for the driver. Speaking of unobstructed views, one side of the vehicle is almost fully closed while the other side features large glass areas. The idea, again, is to have a balance between coziness and enjoying unobstructed views.
