It can be cute and cuddly and can even Tank Turn if you want to!
German startup Electric Brands has started accepting reservations for its cute little contraption named ‘XBus’. So what is it? A bus or a van? Well, it is a modular vehicle, which means the base ‘Freedom’ module/platform can be specified into whatever you desire, including a bus, a delivery van, a pickup truck, and even a camper van. Each of these modules offers two sub-variants: standard and off-road; the latter comes with raised ride height and off-road tyres. Prices in Germany start at €17,380 (US$ 20,647 or INR 15.38 lakh) for the Freedom module.
Notice the negative camber in the rear axle for better stability and handling. Anyway, legally, the XBus is not classified as a traditional automobile in Europe; it belongs to the ‘L7e‘ class, which stands for heavy quadricycles. Inside, it’s not all barebones though, you get a 10.2-inch display, a multifunctional steering wheel, and an audio system. Air conditioning, reversing camera, and even brushed aluminium panels are available in the options list. Safety systems include ABS and ESP.
The XBus has got four wheel hub motors with each developing 3.75 kW (5 metric hp) of continuous power, for a combined 15 kW (20 metric hp) of continuous power. Peak output and max torque are claimed to be 56 kW (76 metric hp) and 1,200 Nm (885 lb-ft), respectively. The top speed is claimed to be over 100 km/h (62+ mph). And guess what? It has got an optional Tank Turn function — similar to what Rivian has, thanks to individual wheel hub motors.
The standard 10 kWh battery pack is claimed to offer a range of up to 200 km (124 mi) in the city and up to 140 km (87 mi) in mixed use conditions. Each XBus module comes with solar panels on the roof to generate additional juice for the batteries. If that’s still not enough, up to 30 kWh battery pack option is available.
