Bentley is offering carbon fibre wheels option for Bentyaga, available to order via Mulliner division later this year. These 22-inch wheels, developed by composites specialist Bucci Composites, are said to be the largest carbon fibre production wheels in the world. Koenigsegg Jesko‘s optional Aircore carbon fibre wheels, for example, measure 20-inch at the front and 21-inch at the rear. Porsche too offers the optional 20-inch carbon fibre wheels. But anyway, let’s talk about these 22-inch ones.
According to Bentley, each wheel offers a weight saving (unsprung mass) of 6 kg (13.2 lbs) compared to the aluminium ones. These wheels are also claimed to be the first carbon fibre wheels to pass all of TÜV’s (Technischer Überwachungsverei) rigorous tests, including biaxial stress testing, radial and lateral impact testing for simulating potholes and cobblestones, tyre overpressure, and excessive torque tests. In a severe impact, the wheels are said to allow a slow tyre deflation, thanks to the intelligent layering of fibre weaves. The aluminium ones would crack or shatter, causing the tyre to explode, Bentley says.
Few more advantages of these carbon fibre wheels over the forged aluminium ones are that the latter can lose up to a degree of camber due to wheel flex, resulting in reduced grip and agility. Stiffer carbon fibre wheels mean a more stable and consistent steering performance, Bentley said.
