Includes Brap Brap plans too.
As with most other carmakers out there, Mazda too has an electrification strategy for the future, which it calls “Sustainable Zoom-Zoom 2030”. The company has shared a few key highlights to help us understand what to expect out of this plan in terms of future products.
Between 2022 and 2025, Mazda will introduce five hybrid models (HEVs), five plug-in hybrid models (PHEVs) and three BEV models, underpinned by ‘Skyactiv Multi-Solution Scalable Architecture’. Of course, the hybrid technology comes from Toyota (Toyota Hybrid System). These products will be introduced in Japan, Europe, the United States, China and ASEAN markets.
Besides petrol MHEV, diesel MHEV, petrol PHEV and HEV powertrains, Mazda’s plan also includes the return of the rotary engine (Wankel engine) which will also be a part of the company’s electrification strategy. More details on this are expected in 2022.
In addition, products underpinned by ‘Skyactiv Scalable EV Architecture’ will be introduced between 2025 and 2030. Based on this product launch plan, Mazda assumes that 100% of its products will have some level of electrification and its EV ratio is gonna be 25% by 2030.
The RX-8 was the last Mazda, in fact, the last series-production road car in the world, to be powered by a Wankel engine that had an rpm limit close to 9,000. Mazda pulled the plug on these engines in 2012 as they failed to meet the stringent emission norms.
