In October 2018, Maruti Suzuki flagged off prototype electric vehicles based on JDM Wagon R for what it described as “field testing as part of the company’s plan to introduce EVs in India by 2020”. There has been no official update since then. However, a test mule has been spotted somewhere in North India recently, suggesting that MSIL’s EV plans are still alive.
Interestingly, its front fascia has a Toyota-ish design language (logo is Photoshopped) suggesting that the Toyota-Suzuki collaboration is sharing the Wagon R-based EV as well. The side profile is pretty close to the ICE-powered Wagon R and so is the rear.
For any reliable technical information on this Wagon R-based EV, we have to wait for some more days. While there’s a mild-hybrid variant in Japan, there’s no battery-electric version yet.
