Well, this is the continuation of last year’s story when Yamaha announced that it is accepting orders from OEMs for its new electric motors with outputs ranging between 35-200 kW (47.5-272 metric hp). The company has now added a 350 kW (476 metric hp) permanent magnet motor (PMSM) to the lineup, which it says will be suitable for “hyper-EVs and other high-output applications”.
Yamaha has also shared a rendering to demonstrate how four of these 800-volt, 350 kW motors can be integrated into an EV platform if an OEM were to produce a hypercar, for example. The smaller 35 kW motor is suitable for motorcycles/two-wheelers and other smaller EV applications; there’ll also be a 150 kW (204 hp) motor for everyday cars. While the smaller capacity motors can be water-cooled, this 350 kW unit will be oil-cooled.
Yamaha plans to exhibit the 350 kW unit and other electric motor prototypes at the Automotive Engineering Exposition 2021 in Yokohama, scheduled for May 26 to May 28, 2021.
