Stellantis’ luxury French marque DS Automobiles has brought back the DS 4 nameplate with a new compact crossover, scheduled to go on sale in the fourth quarter of 2021 (in Europe, Asia, South America and Africa). It’ll be available in three variants: DS 4, DS 4 Cross and DS 4 Performance Line.
The DS 4 is built on the EMP2 platform that is also shared with the latest Citroen and Peugeot cars. It measures 4.40 metres long, 1.83 metres wide (excluding mirrors) and 1.47 metres tall. It boasts a wheelbase of 2.67 metres, which is almost identical to that of the new Citroen C4.
As for the design, the DS 4 adopts all the elements of the brand’s latest design language including the front grille and the dramatic front and rear lighting with its intricate internal detailing. The crossover has a low-slung coupe-SUV-like appearance, which I think makes it look really stylish. Exterior features include LED Matrix headlights, LED running lights (98 LEDs in total) and 20-inch wheels with aero inserts. Also, notice the almost flush-fitting door handles.
The cabin looks equally stylish, especially the two-tone combination. Depending on the variant, materials include different types of leather, Alcantara, forged carbon, and wood. According to the company, the DS 4 is made of 95% reusable materials and 85% recyclable parts. 30% of its weight is from renewable or recycled materials, divided between metals and polymers. The dashboard, in particular, is made of 20% hemp for parts that can’t be seen. Among the recycled materials, polypropylene, polyester and elastomer fibres are used under the chassis as baffles, for noise reducing or as mounting points.
Technology and creature comforts include Augmented Reality Head-Up Display, a 10-inch infotainment system, gesture controls, 14-speaker Focal Electra audio system, PM2.5 filtration, DS Active Scan suspension system, Adaptive Cruise Control, semi-automatic overtaking, Blind Spot Monitoring, and DS Night Vision. Moving on to the powertrains section, there’ll be PureTech 130, 180 and 225 hp petrol versions and a 130 hp BlueHDi diesel version. All these variants come with an 8-speed automatic gearbox. There’ll also be a PHEV variant that combines a 180 hp turbocharged petrol engine, a 110 hp electric motor and an 8-speed automatic gearbox, for a combined output of 225 hp. The PHEV will offer a pure-electric range of up to 50 km (31 mi) as per WLTP.
