In case you missed all the buzz on Jan 13th, a new company purported to be Tesla’s India subsidiary was discovered by the media and there were several questions about the company’s registration itself, its legitimacy. Multiple emails and tweets at Tesla and Elon Musk went unanswered.
However, Musk later responded to an article related to Tesla’s entry into the Indian market. What’s interesting is that the article he chose to respond to is the one that doesn’t mention anything about Tesla’s India subsidiary that many are seeking clarifications. His cryptic two-word response neither confirms the new company nor denies it; his response is as smart as his choice of article to respond.
The fishy-ness surrounding the new company is probably part of the plan. The co-working space and Gmail ID in the regulatory filings are most likely to avoid unwanted approaches from vendors, banks and whatnot. As for the low capital, well, if the deal with the governments doesn’t work out or if the whole plan of doing business in India doesn’t seem viable, they can simply drop it like they never existed in the country in the first place.
Either way, let’s wait and see how this story develops.
