2021 Rogue is Nissan’s first model with recycled aluminum parts

As you know, recycling is the only way to make the best use of our limited natural resources because obviously, we haven’t yet figured out a way to bring resources from a different world. Which is why carmakers have adopted the “closed-loop” recycling system where the scrap aluminum bits are reused, which is, of course, a sensible thing to do. Audi, for example, recycles the offcuts at the Neckarsulm site itself.

As for Nissan, the 2021 Rogue is the brand’s first global model to contain aluminum parts made using this closed-loop recycling system. Once the doors and hoods are stamped from an aluminum alloy sheet, the offcuts are collected and sent back to the suppliers to be redelivered to Nissan as aluminum alloy sheets. Different grades of aluminum are kept separate after collecting the scraps.

According to the U.S.-based Aluminum Association, recycling scrap aluminum saves more than 90% of the energy needed to create a comparable amount from raw materials. The organization estimates that nearly 75% of all aluminum made is still in use.

Under the Nissan Green Program 2022, Nissan aims to replace 30% of the raw materials used in cars built in 2022 with materials that don’t rely on newly mined resources.
