As you know, carmakers quote the luggage/boot capacity of their cars in litres. The Skoda Enyaq iV, for example, offers 585-litres of luggage capacity. But, what does that actually mean? How is it calculated? If you had those questions, embedded above is a quick video that reveals how it is done.
Luggage compartment space in a car is still measured manually using standardised blocks. Apparently, people are better at performing this task than computers.
These 1-litre green blocks measure 20 × 10 × 5 centimetres and arranging them is governed by a technical standard (ISO 3832, if you must know). You can’t just cram them the way you want or wherever you want; the rules also dictate how far the blocks can go, and they can be stacked just until the height of the parcel shelf. Yes, the space beneath the luggage compartment floor is included as well.
And, when it comes to measuring with the rear seats folded down, the front seats need to be put in the right position for a fair measurement. Meaning, dummies are used to simulate the front seat occupants.
