General Motors’ manufacturing facility in Talegaon, Maharashtra, was supposed to be acquired by China’s Great Wall Motors; the latter had signed an MoU with the Maharashtra government in June 2020 for the same. However, due to China-India skirmishes, Maharashtra has put the deal between the two companies on hold. According to reports, GM is left with no option other than to shut down the factory, putting around 1,800 workers at risk of losing their jobs.

Just to remind, GM had quit the Indian market in 2017 and its Halol plant in Gujarat was acquired by SAIC Motor, which currently manufactures MG-branded cars for the market. The Talegaon plant in Maharashtra was focusing on exports.

GWM also had plans to set-up an R&D facility in Bengaluru, Karnataka, which together with the Talegaon plant, were expected to generate employment for over 3,000 people in a phased manner.
