That’s right. Mazda is giving away 50 units of the MX-5 Miata 100th Anniversary Edition to ‘Mazda Heroes’ in the United States. How to become a Mazda Hero? Well, as the name suggests, the individuals who demonstrated their selfless acts during these trying times. From teachers who went the extra mile to enhance distance learning, to community members sourcing PPE for others.
If you know someone who’s eligible, it could be yourself, an online form can be filled up and submitted here. The form also requires you to submit a link to your YouTube video that explains in a minute how the nominee is eligible to become a Mazda Hero.
The 100th Anniversary Special Edition MX-5 Miata was announced in June this year as part of Mazda’s centenary celebrations. It’ll be available with either the RF (power-retractable hard top) or with an exclusive red soft top. The exterior is finished in Snowflake White Pearl Mica premium paint, with a “100 Years 1920 – 2020” badge on the front fenders and a special Anniversary logo on the wheel center caps. The wheels are 17-inch aluminum alloys with dark silver finish.
The cockpit features red leather seats and red carpeting — a nod to the two-tone R360 Coupe — Mazda’s first passenger car. It was a kei car with a tiny 356 cc engine in an RR layout. The headrests are embossed with the 100th Anniversary Special Logo and so is the key fob. Convenience features include Apple CarPlay & Android Auto connectivity, seat heating, Bose audio system with headrest speakers, and automatic climate control.
This commemorative Miata is powered by a Skyactiv-G 2.0-litre naturally aspirated gasoline engine that develops 184 hp (135 kW) at 7,000 rpm and 205 Nm (151 lb-ft) of torque at 4,000 rpm. The engine can be paired with a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed automatic gearbox with paddle shifters. The manual versions will include a limited-slip differential, Bilstein dampers, front shock tower brace, and sport-tuned suspension.
