Hyundai has reportedly recalled the Kona Electric at its home market in South Korea over the possibility of faulty battery cells that could pose a fire risk. The reports claim that the recall has been extended to the U.S. market as well. Starting on October 16, 2020, the recall, which may include battery replacements and/or software updates after inspections, involves 25,564 Kona EVs built between September 2017 and March 2020.

So far, there have been a few fire incidents involving the Kona EV, including the one in Canada which allegedly exploded in the owner’s garage. More on that here.

It is not yet known how many more countries/markets will fall under this recall or how many more vehicles are affected, but Hyundai announced in July this year that it has sold more than 100,000 Kona EVs globally so far. Perhaps, it is best to check with your local dealer to verify if your Kona EV VIN falls under this recall.

LG Chem, which supplies the battery cells for Kona EV, says that a joint investigation with Hyundai couldn’t reproduce the fire and hence it is too early to declare or blame anything.
