BMW has teamed up with New York-based lifestyle brand Kith, to create a special edition M4 Competition Coupé, limited to 150 units. Also, as part of the collaboration, Kith will be offering a collection of co-branded apparel and accessories. At the time of publishing this story, Kith website says that the car is already “sold out”.
Anyway, the story begins with Kith founder Ronnie Fieg recently acquiring an E30 M3 and restoring it with his own branding touches in collaboration with BMW M. Both take the collaboration further and put up a Kith pop‑up store in Brooklyn, NY, along with the new M4 Competition Coupé as an official announcement of the collaboration.
Some of my favorite memories from growing up are going to visit my grandfather and riding around in his BMWs in the 1980s. I remember he had an E21 320i and that his prized possession was an E30 M3. These moments in my life really shaped my passion for BMW, so working on this project with them has brought everything full circle. – Ronnie Fieg
The original concept that BMW and Kith created was finished in Cinnabar Red shade, the same one as on the E30 M3. However, the ones that are being offered for sale, will be available in three matte paint finishes: Frozen Black, Frozen Dark Silver and Frozen Brilliant White. Apparently, these were the most popular colors for the E30 M3 back in the day. Other touches include a fusion logo that adds an extra ring around the BMW roundel in the BMW M colors of light blue, dark blue and red. The optional carbon-fibre roof features Kith lettering with BMW M stripes woven into the surface. Also, notice that a Kith badge replaces the M4 Competition badge at the rear.
Rounding off the looks are M forged double-spoke wheels finished in high-gloss Jet Black, measuring 19-inch at the front and 20-inch at the rear. The M Compound brakes with red calipers bearing the M logo come standard.
The touches in the cabin are equally tasteful, which include embossed Kith lettering on the M Carbon bucket seats’ headrests and on the central armrest; Kith badging on the centre console and underneath the front seat headrests, and of course, the seats themselves featuring the BMW M tri-color accents over the black Merino full-leather upholstery.
As for the technical bits, the 3.0-litre in-line 6-cylinder twin-turbo petrol engine pumps out the same 510 metric hp (375 kW) and 650 Nm (479 lb-ft) of torque as the regular M4 Competition. The 8-speed M Steptronic gearbox drives the rear wheels as standard, while the allocatees can specify the M xDrive AWD system.
Deliveries of the M4 Competition x Kith will begin in summer 2021.
