Cadillac has revealed the ‘Lyriq’ concept — a crossover, which is going to be the brand’s first all-electric vehicle. The production version will pack all of the brand’s latest technologies including an updated version of Super Cruise that debuted with the first-ever CT5.

Led by Lyriq, Cadillac will redefine American luxury over the next decade with a new portfolio of transformative EVs. We will deliver experiences that engage the senses, anticipate desires and enable our customers to go on extraordinary journeys. – Steve Carlisle, President, GM North America

As for the styling, the Lyriq flaunts an evolved version of Cadillac‘s latest design language with a vertical LED signature. The “black crystal” grille at the front is part of a dramatic lighting choreography, which together with the aforementioned vertical LED signature, greets the owner upon approach. However, we’re not yet sure which ones are the headlights. Perhaps, it’s the inner one?

The drama is more fierce at the rear with a massive, split taillight design, which are also part of the lighting choreography.

The side profile gives you a clear idea of all the drama that’s going on at the rear; the upper section of the taillights becomes a part of the thick C-pillar. Also, notice the steeply raked rear windscreen. Was that for a “Coupe-SUV” effect? Except for that busy-looking rear-end, the rest of the vehicle looks fairly clean.

Inside, the dashboard is dominated by a wide, curved display, similar to that of the 2021 Escalade. Here in the Lyriq, it’s a 33-inch LED display that incorporates driver information details, infotainment controls and camera views. The rest of the cabin looks clean and minimal. Thankfully, there are some physical buttons and knobs too.

Blocking unwanted sounds
Cadillac says that the Lyriq will feature a new road noise cancellation technology, which takes active noise cancellation to the next level by adding more microphones and accelerometers, which improve noise cancellation abilities.

With this new system, Cadillac’s performance and audio engineers can target the frequency range of tire cavity noise, reducing the noise level in the vehicle and allowing for a quieter in-cabin experience.

Other technologies and features include Augmented Reality-enhanced Head-Up Display, 19-speaker AKG Studio audio system, and remote parking.

Powertrain
Moving on, Lyriq has an electric motor at the rear, which contributes to a near 50/50 weight distribution together with the placement of the battery pack. Speaking of the battery pack, it’s the GM’s new Ultium battery system that we saw not too long ago. Ultium’s NCMA (nickel-cobalt-manganese-aluminum) chemistry uses aluminum in the cathode to help reduce the need for rare-earth materials such as cobalt. GM claims that its engineers reduced the cobalt content by more than 70% compared to current GM batteries.

We developed an architecture specifically for EVs. – Jamie Brewer, Lyriq chief engineer

There’ll also be a performance all-wheel drive option.

As for charging, Cadillac claims that Lyriq can charge at rates over 150 kW with DC fast charging. Cadillac estimates a range of over 300 miles (483 km) on a full charge based on internal testing.

The Lyriq represents the next iteration of the iconic brand’s styling, enabled by electrification, as only Cadillac can express. Inside and out, Lyriq is a thoughtful integration of design and technology and is intended to make every drive an occasion. – Andrew Smith, Executive Director, Global Cadillac Design
