This is the latest product resulting from the ongoing Toyota-Suzuki collaboration. Suzuki has decided to use the ‘Across’ nameplate that was once used for its 250 cc motorcycle, for a new crossover based on the 5th generation Toyota RAV4. More specifically, the RAV4 PHEV that went on sale in Japan recently.
The styling changes appear to be mainly only on the front fascia while the rest of the vehicle is identical to the RAV4 except for the badges. However, it has to be said that Suzuki’s team has done a good job compared to Toyota’s lazyass Indian team who literally re-badged a Suzuki Baleno. At least the front fascia of the Across looks fairly different from the RAV4.
The interior looks identical to the RAV4’s except for the badge, of course. The Across carries over all the features of the RAV4 too, including convenience features such as a 9-inch touchscreen display with Apple CarPlay & Android Auto connectivity, and active safety and driver assistance systems such as Pre-Collision System, Lane Tracing Assist and Dynamic Radar Cruise Control.
As mentioned, powering the Across is a plug-in hybrid powertrain. It combines a 2.5-litre 4-cylinder petrol engine (A25A-FXS) and two electric motors, forming the E-Four AWD system. The ICE develops 136 kW (185 hp) and 227 Nm (167 lb-ft) of torque — those numbers appear to be a bit more compared to RAV4 PHEV‘s official quote. The front e-motor develops 134 kW (182 hp) and 270 Nm (199 lb-ft) of torque while the rear electric motor pumps out 40 kW (54 hp) and 121 Nm (89 lb-ft) of torque — same as the RAV4 PHEV. Transmission is an eCVT.
The Across will go on sale in European markets later this year.
