Ford Fiesta Van gets a mild-hybrid system for more savings

The Europe-exclusive Ford Fiesta Van has got the 48-volt mild-hybrid system, in an effort to make the small commercial vehicle more fuel efficient.

The 125 hp 1.0-litre (999 cc) 3-cylinder EcoBoost (turbocharged) petrol engine is coupled with the aforementioned 48-volt mild-hybrid system, where a belt-driven integrated starter/generator (BISG) replaces the standard alternator. It recovers energy lost during braking and coasting and stores it in a lithium-ion battery pack.

As with all mild-hybrid systems, the BISG also acts as a motor and provides torque assistance (of up to 50 Nm/37 lb-ft) during normal driving and acceleration, utilizing the stored energy.

Ford claims that the mild-hybrid system contributes to fuel efficiency of 4.1 l/100 km and CO2 emissions of 93 g/km NEDC (5.1 l/100 km and 115 g/km WLTP) – a fuel efficiency improvement of up to 6% compared with the non-hybrid model (NEDC).

In addition, the EcoBoost Hybrid powertrain features cylinder deactivation technology that automatically switches off one of the cylinders when full capacity is not needed.

The Fiesta Van EcoBoost Hybrid is available in both ‘Trend’ and ‘Sport’ trims and replaces the 85 hp 1.5-litre TDCi powertrain option. A non-mild-hybrid 125 hp 1.0-litre EcoBoost with 6-speed manual transmission is also available.
