The updated 5 Series lineup we saw recently had the performance variant missing. It’s now here, finished in a hot new paint called Motegi Red metallic. The photos here feature only the new M5 Competition.
The styling updates are in line with the “normal” BMW 5 Series model, especially the headlights, Kidney grille and the taillights. The distinguishing elements are high-gloss black grille, sporty front & rear bumpers, dark surrounds for the taillights, an integrated boot lid spoiler, and 20-inch M light-alloy wheels in Y-spoke design. The 20-inch M double-spoke wheels in polished Orbit Grey from the M8 are available as an option.
As before, the M5 Competition rides 7 mm lower than the M5. Both the M5 and M5 Competition are fitted with M Compound brakes as standard, while the buyers can go for the optional M Carbon ceramic brakes that are 23 kg (51 lbs) lighter.
BMW says that the new M5 Competition borrows the shock absorbers from the M8 Gran Coupe. The damper control system was adapted accordingly and fully recalibrated, which has led to a more comfortable high-speed motorway driving.
The updated interior features a 12.3-inch infotainment system, a 12.3-inch instrument display, Head-Up Display with two viewing modes, M Sport seats, and a Track mode (for M5 Competition). The red-painted M1 and M2 configurable buttons are present too. More info here.
Moving on to the business end of the story, the M5 continues to be powered by a 4.4-litre biturbo V8 motor, producing the same 441 kW (600 hp) at 6000 rpm and 750 Nm (553 lb-ft) of torque between 1800-5860 rpm (60 rpm more). The M5 Competition gets an additional 25 hp.
The Competition variant also features bespoke engine mounts that are stiffer than in the M5 with a spring rate of 900 N/mm compared to 580 N/mm in the non-Competition car.
The engine is paired with an 8-speed M Steptronic transmission and M xDrive AWD system. Both variants also get Active M Differential at the rear. The M5 Competition is claimed to sprint from 0-100 km/h (62 mph) in 3.3 seconds and on to a top speed of 250 km/h (155 mph). The top speed can be increased to 305 km/h (190 mph) with the optional M Driver’s package.
Prices in Germany will start at €120,900 for the M5 and €129,900 for the M5 Competition.
