BMW is correcting the goofed-up thing of CarPlay for the infotainment system and an Android smartphone to unlock the car. The Android Auto for BMWs is expected from July 2020 and now the other thing to correct is the ability to unlock the car via an iPhone.
At the recent Apple Worldwide Developer Conference, it was announced that BMW will be the first carmaker to enable the use of an iPhone as a fully digital car key. The upcoming BMW Digital Key for iPhone will enable the drivers to just tap to unlock and get going, the company said.
Setup of the Digital Key can be done through the BMW Smartphone App. The car owner can also share the access with up to 5 friends including a configurable car access option for young drivers which restricts top speed, horsepower, maximum radio volume and few more.
Additional features include power reserve for iPhone where the car keys will still function for up to 5 hours if the iPhone turns off due to low battery, and Apple Watch compatibility.
The BMW Digital Key for iPhone will be available in 45 countries for models including 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, X5, X6, X7, X5M, X6M and Z4 if manufactured after July 1st, 2020.
