Volkswagen said that the company itself will erect the buildings and infrastructure for the Northvolt Zwei joint venture factory to produce lithium-ion battery cells at VW’s Salzgitter site where the Center of Excellence for Battery Cells already exists. The joint venture was announced in 2019 with Volkswagen’s plan to invest around €900 million in Swedish battery producer Northvolt.
In the latest update, Volkswagen said that it would initially invest around €450 million, with the construction work scheduled to commence by the end of this year. Battery cell production at the plant is scheduled to commence in early 2024 with an initial production capacity of 16 gigawatt-hours (GWh).

We are pooling expertise at the Salzgitter site with production capabilities and the Center of Excellence for Battery Cells, and are therefore driving battery cell development further forward, developing new standards and transferring them direct to the manufacturing process. – Thomas Schmall, CEO, Volkswagen Group Components
Northvolt aims to build the greenest battery in the world with minimal carbon footprint. The company offers batteries in Cylindrical 21-70 and Prismatic PHEV2 formats.
BMW Group has also invested in Northvolt.
