Cadillac has taken the wraps off the 5th generation Escalade to be launched in the third quarter of 2020 in North America. The iconic luxury SUV boasts new technology and more space onboard.
The bold exterior maintains Cadillac’s signature vertical lighting element, but the new interpretation adds a sleek, horizontal headlamp to make the vehicle appear wider. The tall, vertical, taillamp signature adds deep three-dimensional layers with detailed etching. As standard, the new Escalade rides on 22-inch wheels.
For the first time, the Escalade will be offered in a ‘Sport’ trim. It features a black mesh grille and black trim across the exterior. Luxury and Premium Luxury models showcase a bright Galvano finish, while Platinum models are the range-topping ones with unique interior and exterior details.
The highlight of the new Escalade’s interior is a curved OLED display with more than 38-inches of total diagonal display area. Its pixel density is claimed to be twice the density of a 4K TV. Apparently, the technology delivers perfect blacks and the largest color range of any automotive display in production today.
The system includes three screens: a 7.2-inch touch control panel (driver information center) to the driver’s left, a 14.2-inch cluster display behind the steering wheel and a 16.9-inch infotainment screen to the driver’s right.
Other features include Surround Vision that employs four exterior cameras to provide a 2-megapixel bird’s-eye view; and rear-seat entertainment with a pair of 12.6-inch touch displays.
The options list is also big. It includes 36-speaker AKG audio system, Augmented Reality-enabled navigation, Rear Camera Mirror, Night Vision, and Trailering Integration Package.
The 2021 Escalade also features Super Cruise driver assistance technology. It enables hands-free driving on more than 200,000 miles of compatible highways in the United States and Canada, using LiDAR map data, high-precision GPS, a state-of-the-art driver attention system and a network of cameras and radar sensors, Cadillac said.
The SUV gets an independent rear suspension, and Magnetic Ride Control – claimed to be the world’s fastest reacting suspension technology. It uses sensors to continually “read” the road and alter the damping rate of the shocks almost instantly. It is claimed to react much faster than computer-controlled shock absorbers to reduce vertical body motion, body-roll and vibrations.
Buyers can opt for Air Ride Adaptive Suspension that works with Magnetic Ride Control. In highway driving, the system automatically lowers the ride height to improve aerodynamics; and a driver-selectable setting lowers the suspension by 2-inches (51 mm) to aid passenger entry and exit when the vehicle is parked. Also in the options list is an electronic limited-slip differential (eLSD).
Thanks to a new architecture, the 2021 Escalade claims to offer more room for the passengers and their cargo. There is 40% more third-row legroom (34.9-inches/886 mm) and a 68% increase in maximum cargo space behind the third row (25.5 cubic feet/722 liters) in the standard-length model.
Powering the new Escalade is a 6.2-litre V8 gasoline, producing 313 kW (425 hp) at 5,600 rpm and 623 Nm (460 lb-ft) of torque at 4,100 rpm. There’s also a 3.0-litre in-line 6-cylinder turbocharged Duramax diesel engine, producing 207 kW (281 hp) at 3,750 rpm and 623 Nm (460 lb-ft) of torque at 1,500 rpm.
Transmission is a 10-speed automatic. 4WD is available on all models. The 2021 Escalade goes on sale in late-2020 in North America, with availability in other regions to follow. It’ll be manufactured at GM’s Arlington, Texas assembly facility.
